CBS Television Stations consists of 28 CBS-owned stations in 17 major U.S. markets, as well as the stations’ digital properties. The portfolio of stations includes 15 that are part of the CBS Television Network, eight affiliates of The CW Network, three independent stations and two MyNetworkTV affiliates.
The station group’s properties also include CBSN Local, a joint initiative with CBS Interactive that features direct-to-consumer streaming news services in the markets where the Company has local news organizations. CBS Television Stations’ premium local content is also distributed to consumers by the group’s websites and mobile applications.
CBS News and Stations is searching for the next news and content leader of its portfolio in New York City.
We’re looking for a dynamic, inclusive, hardworking leader who has a history of exhibiting excellent news judgment. The next Vice President and News Director will lead the news products WCBS-TV, WLNY-TV, CBSN New York and CBSNewYork.com (collectively, CBS New York).
As part of leading CBSN New York the VP/ND will be instrumental in developing strategies to drive audience growth. The right candidate will also work with the President and General Manager to establish quality journalism covering the various communities throughout the Tri-State area. The right person will own the charge to evolving the newsroom to a multi-platform, multi-skilled operation that produces content 24/7.
Qualified applicants will have a record of covering breaking news and weather. They will also have experience producing investigative, consumer advocacy and enterprise reporting. Someone with a history of recruiting, developing, and retaining journalists is also a must.
Being a problem solver and creative doer are important. We also are looking for candidates with a history of handling resources in a major newsroom and making smart investments geared toward audience growth.
Overview and Responsibilities:
- Creates 24/7 strategy and direction for news coverage across platforms.
- Ability to leverage and apply research leading to audience growth
- Cultivate growth of journalists through feedback, performance management and training
- Works with fellow department heads to improve promotion and monetization of content across platforms
- Ability to delegate and appoint newsroom staff into appropriate roles maximizing strengths
- Understanding of how to work well with people from all backgrounds
- Familiar with managing newsroom budgets and anticipating major financial challenges and changes
Basic Qualifications:
- BA from a four-year college or university is preferred with
- 5-10 years’ experience in newsroom leadership role, preferably larger market
