Channel 5 was launched as Britain's fifth and final public service broadcaster in 1997. Well over 30m UK viewers watch Channel 5 weekly, tuning in for programmes as diverse as Football League Tonight, Test Cricket and Big Brother as well as the award-winning children's strand, Milkshake! Channel 5 also operates digital channels Spike, 5*, 5USA and 5+24. The broadcaster is a shareholder in YouView, which launched in 2012, bringing seamless TV and catch-up viewing to UK homes.


Channel 5's Digital Media Group (DMG) creates and operates the broadcaster's products across a range of digital media platforms: websites and social media, connected TVs and games consoles, smart-phones and tablets. These include, video-on-demand (VoD) services My5 and Demand 5 and pre-school video service Milkshake!


As part of the Commercial Division, DMG delivers incremental revenues and profits to Channel 5. DMG operates on the fundamental principle of outsourcing and is structured as a lean centralised function that relies on a wide and flexible network of outsourced technology and service providers to create a much larger, highly skilled virtual department.


Reporting to the Senior Director of Quality and Operations, this role is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, commercially-driven, growing digital media team. The successful candidate will be from a hands-on testing background, and will be looking to move in to a wider test management role.

Your primary responsibilities will be to:

  1. Own and manage the test function for all OTT VOD applications and backend systems in the Digital Media Group (DMG)
  2. Produce and maintain rigorous test procedures for all systems
  3. Ensure systematic testing is performed across all apps and sites  
  4. Ensure the highest possible standards of quality are achieved and maintained for all products


  • Document, implement, monitor, and enforce a set of Testing/QA standards
  • Work with DMG Product Managers to identify and document test requirements for each sprint
  • Produce Test plans across all My5 platforms for each sprint.
  • Produce Test reports for Product Managers at the end of each test cycle
  • Produce Regression test reports for review by CAB
  • Periodically review all test cases/plans and ensure content and structure is maintained
  • Ensure regression test packs are kept up to date with new functionality across all platforms.


  • Devise and implement a Test Automation strategy, to include process, framework and tools, in order to automate digital test plans where appropriate.
  • Work with 3rd parties to deliver test automation.
  • Ensure automated tests are run as part of regression tests for each sprint.
  • Define scope of test automation.
  • Provide test automation status reports to stakeholders.

Hands On Testing

  • Perform UAT testing on all new application builds at the end of each sprint
  • Perform full Regression tests on all products before updates are released to Live
  • Perform regular Smoke/Sanity tests on live platforms and report issues
  • Routinely test VOD content delivery and playback across My5 and Demand 5 devices and report issues
  • Work with Infrastructure Manager to arrange and perform Load and Penetration testing of new infrastructure
  • Carry out cross-browser and cross-platform testing of all web based UI’s

3rd Party Testing

  • Liaise with Ad Operations team at Sky Media to ensure all ad formats are adequately tested before release to live
  • Work with analytics providers to test all release candidates comply with their specifications
  • Conduct joint testing with all external development agencies

Process Management

  • Engage and produce full briefs for additional test resources when required
  • Create bugs in JIRA and assign to relevant developer resource
  • Keep track of the new requirements / change in requirements of Projects
  • Escalate issues that relate to Project scope/dependencies to Product Manager/Operations Manager
  • Organise regular test status meetings for DMG stakeholders
  • Ensure the timely delivery of specified testing milestones
  • Participate in CAB meetings

Line Management

  • Day to day management of in house test team – 6 Test Analyst
  • Management of short-term contractors as and when required

  1. Successful candidate will be from a hands-on testing background, with an emphasis on OTT VOD applications, and will be looking to move in to a wider test management role.
  2. Extensive experience writing UAT and Regression test plans for a wide range of technologies
  3. Extensive experience testing technologies including video players, mobile apps, web sites, Smart TV’s, set-top boxes, content management systems, CDN’s, ad servers and analytics solutions
  4. Experience working with test automation tools – e.g. Selenium WebDriver
  5. Ability to read and understand technical specifications and code, and translate them into executable test plans
  6. Ability to go “off piste” when testing, to find problems/areas of weakness with applications that are not expected
  7. Ability to write detailed briefs for external/3rd party test teams
  8. Hands-on experience of using debugging and tracing tools such as Fiddler, Charles, and Wireshark.
  9. Educated to degree level or higher in a relevant technical discipline.
  10. Strong oral and written communication skills.



  1. Experience using/managing bug tracking tools (e.g. JIRA, Zendesk)
  2. Knowledge of video advertising solutions such as Freewheel
  3. Knowledge of display ad server solutions such as DFP or 24/7 Real Media
  4. Good understanding of HTML, XML, JSON, CSS, Flash and Javascript.
  5. Experience of content management systems such as Wordpress or Drupal.
  6. Good understanding of network analysis and configuration (e.g. Traceroute, NSLookup, Whois).
  7. Experience of agile application development processes.
  8. Experience of using analytics tools such as Comscore, Omniture, Nielsen or Google Analytics.
  9. Knowledge of VoD workflows and OTT delivery, including video content processing.
