Noggin is a leading learning service for families with preschoolers. We deliver streaming and interactive learning content that helps young kids develop skills, knowledge, and passions through play with the characters they love. We also help parents help their kids thrive. Noggin is a direct-to-consumer offering available on standalone mobile apps, connected TV apps, and add-on channels. We are forming a team of highly motivated individuals who are eager to work in a start-up-like environment within a large media company. We need innovators and self-starters who are passionate about playful learning and comfortable working in a fast-paced, creative-led organization.

The Role:

Are you interested in working across varied, modern technology stacks to help shape a consumer facing experience that will have real impact with parents and young children? Noggin is seeking a principal architect to define technology strategy across web, mobile, interactive content and connected TV! You will be responsible for working with multiple team leads to build a technology roadmap that will bring the product team’s vision to life, in a way that is scalable, testable, maintainable and secure! You’ll need to be comfortable embracing uncertainty, an iterative approach to strategy and above all else, collaboration. The role will require someone able to dive deep into technical challenges, but also able to zoom out and see the bigger opportunity. We keep abreast of production workstreams, drive standards, anticipate potential risks, and lead hypothesis-driven experimentation activities to set others up for success. Comprehensive verbal and written communications skills are a must—including both technical and business acumen.

You will provide hands-on architecture leadership, guidance, and mentorship to our distributed engineering team. We work shoulder-to-shoulder to manage technical debt and lay flat the architectural runway necessary for the delivery team to meet deadlines.

  • Ensure that the deliverables are robust, scalable and drive towards a cohesive technology strategy.
  • Identify performance and design faults and improvements using adequate tooling (New Relic, Skylight, JMeter and similar).
  • Create, maintain, evangelize and relentlessly improve the Noggin technology roadmap
  • Define and monitor a consistent set of QoS metrics engineering can embed across all platforms to gauge in-the-field performance and expedite tracking down runtime issues
  • Continually learn and explore emerging technologies with an eye to how they could benefit the Noggin product vision
  • Find ways to upskill the technical team via conferences, investment in internal training, as well as external partnerships
  • Establish and lead a hypothesis-driven, structured experimentation and innovation COE, (including a small team of rotating developers focused on technical prototypes and POCs)
  • Partner with ViacomCBS Architecture Guild to apply enterprise alignments when applicable, as well as contribute back Noggin specific experiences that bolster the broader organization
  • Support use of company standard CI/CD tools and methodologies (Jenkins, github, etc.)
  • Adhere to current and be on the lookout for changes concerning company / industry policy and governance. (Think PII, ADA, COPPA, GDPR and Information Security.)
  • Be a thought-leader, with real-world business common sense, and the ability to collaborate across functions. The principal architect should lead by example, aspiring to be both a role model for the team and a trusted advisor for leadership.
  • Partner with others inside and outside the engineering organization to gather all requirements to formulate the appropriate architecture required to provide system functionality, deciding when to advocate, and when to compromise, to arrive at a mutually-acceptable solution
  • Maintain architecture documentation, hold periodic architecture reviews, look for opportunities to create templates, streamlined workflows, common libraries and shared API contracts

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline. (Combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.)
  • 8+ years experience in mobile and/or web development
  • 4+ years in a software architecture role
  • 3+ years of backend / API development
  • 2+ years experience with analytics and data structures

Additional Qualifications:

  • Have been an integral part of shipping at least one large-scale consumer facing digital experience (bonus points if this product was in a kid-focused or education related area)
  • Effective collaborator and communicator with an ability to explain technical concepts in business terms
  • Experience with agile, design thinking, enterprise architecture, 2d/3d asset pipelines, and game design a plus
